The first month sets the habits. This free puppy first 30 days checklist keeps it simple: a crate, a potty routine, short games and lots of calm new things. Print it and tick it off as you go.

What is inside the puppy first 30 days checklist

  • A new puppy supplies list, from a crate with a divider to enzyme cleaner and a vet visit booked for week one
  • Before day one: puppy-proofing, one potty spot and house rules everyone agrees on
  • Crate training steps that keep the crate a good place
  • A puppy potty schedule for daytime and overnight
  • Socialization by week, weeks 1 to 4
  • Name and engagement games, handling practice and early boundaries
  • A day-30 check to see how far you have come

Crate training a new puppy

Toss treats in and let the pup walk in on its own, feed meals in the crate, keep the crate next to your bed for the first nights and start with short stays while you are home. Let the pup out when it is quiet, not while it cries, and never use the crate as punishment.

A simple puppy potty schedule

Take the pup out right after waking, eating, drinking and playing, and before the crate. While awake, start with every 1 to 2 hours and stretch it slowly as they succeed. Use the same spot every time, reward the second they finish and clean accidents with enzyme cleaner instead of scolding.

Puppy socialization week by week

Calm, positive exposure is the goal, not as much as possible. Week 1 is home base: household sounds, new floors and gentle handling. Week 2 adds calm visitors. Week 3 adds new places from a safe distance, and week 4 builds it up with puppy class once your vet says it is OK. If the pup hides or freezes, back off and go slower.

The day-30 check

By the end of the month, look for a pup that goes in the crate on its own, has fewer accidents, turns to its name most of the time, lets you handle paws, ears and mouth, and bounces back from new sights and sounds.

General guidance, not veterinary advice. Ask your vet when your pup is safe on public ground and around unknown dogs.

Questions about this guide

How often should a new puppy go out to potty?

Right after waking, eating, drinking and playing, and before the crate. While awake, start with every 1 to 2 hours and stretch it slowly as your pup succeeds. Expect one or two trips overnight at first.

What supplies do I need for a new puppy?

A crate sized for the adult dog with a divider, a washable bed, bowls, the food the breeder used, a flat collar with ID, a 6 ft leash, a long line, chew and tug toys, soft treats, enzyme cleaner and a vet visit booked for the first week. The checklist has the full list.

When can my puppy go to puppy class or dog parks?

Ask your vet when your pup is safe on public ground and around unknown dogs. The guide places puppy class in week 4 once your vet says OK and says to skip dog parks until then.
